De Tomaso P900
A $3 million hypercar
888 hp too wild for public roads!?
De Tomaso Automobili launched the P900 hypercar, a wild beast that could easily free any billionaire from their boring life. With a price tag of $3 million and an exclusivity of just 18 pieces, this is the ideal gift that all sheikhs with track driving skills dream of.
The Italian marque used to be known for racing and limited-production sports cars, but its fortunes took a turn for the worse in 2004 when De Tomaso went into liquidation. Although a buyer was found, it did not end well, and the company was again for sale in 2012.
Two years later, the De Tomaso name was bought by Norman Choi of Ideal Team Ventures, which also owns Apollo Automobili. Under new ownership, the P72 supercar was introduced in 2019, based on the Apollo Intensa Emozione. Three years later, another P-badged hypercar was launched, called the P900. For now it is only intended for the track, reflecting the power of its V12 engine and its weight of less than 900 kilograms. The 6.2 liter V12 is a naturally aspirated beast built by German engineering firm Capricorn.
It weighs only 220 kg, which partly explains how De Tomaso managed to keep the weight low. The engine can rev up to 12,300 rpm for a beautiful sound and exhilarating performance, thanks to its 888 horses galloping through an Xtrac sequential transmission to the rear wheels. As impressive as it sounds, this drive is still under development and won't be ready until 2024. As the P900 will make its public debut in the summer of 2023, De Tomaso is offering an alternative solution for powering the hypercar.
It comes from a Judd V10, which De Tomaso says is related to the engine in the 1997 Benetton B197 F1 car. At the time, it had 750 horsepower, but modern technologies could convince it to push more. In terms of design, the De Tomaso P900 is pure car porn, with a body made entirely of carbon fiber.
It's styled by the same team that gave us the Apollo Intensa Emozione. Some of the body parts are taken from the road-going P72, but most of the body on the P900 is new. The sculptural shape starts tame at the front, but becomes wild at the rear, where the massive spoiler features active aero technology. The aerodynamics have been optimized in a wind tunnel, and we will see how many more optimizations there will be before its premiere in June 2023.
